Self Love, The Lion King and Your Insides are on the Outside

Shirt, belt and cardigan are thrifted | Lion King brooches gift from Katie (thrifted) | skirt is Paper Hearts | tights are from Clear It | shoes are Naot

Someone once suggested that I write down a list of my achievements and carry it around with me. I thought that this was a pretty silly idea. Like what, I'm going to be standing in the middle of a busy shopping centre one day, reading through this list of how great I am? What if someone saw what I was reading/found the piece of paper? They'd think I was an absolute egomaniac.

But after having a couple of pretty low weeks, I thought I'd give this list-making thing a shot. Couldn't hurt. Well, I just finished said list and I have to say that I feel a lot better. Being a perfectionist, I'm always far too hard on myself when I don't feel like I'm pushing myself to the absolute limit. I was used to writing lists of "things that I should do", not "things I have done". But that's actually not a good way to live. Now when I am feeling like I haven't done enough or that I'm not good enough, I think that looking at this list of achievements will help a lot. I highly recommend it if you're in need of a little bit of self-love.
On a completely different topic, how ridiculously wonderful are these Lion King pins that Katie thrifted me from Estonia?!

So I was listening to a podcast today when I was reminded of one of my favourite facts from first-year biology. Ready to have your mind blown?

The contents of your stomach are technically on the outside of your body.

Wait what?
Your digestive tract is really just a long tube with two openings that lead directly to the outside. The wall of the gut is continuous with the skin, and so whatever is inside your stomach is technically on the outside of your body. And you don’t have to dissect through any of the body's tissues to get to your stomach or intestines.
Mmm... biology.
If you imagine yourself to be a kind of huge, biological donut, your digestive tract is analogous to the donut’s hole - it is inside the donut in a way, but it’s not really “inside” the donut - it's not a part of the dough.

So there you go.

I hope you're all having a beautiful day,

  1. Love this! List making is so great :) I have a little notebook which is full of quotes of nice things people have said to me which I can just whip out when I'm feeling down. And I write 3 good things that have happened to me each day and put them in a jamjar, watching it fill up as the weeks pass by feels great! Totally cheesy, but so helpful! In love with your outfit as ever!

  2. I think this is a great idea, It's hard to do these exercises when we normally try so hard to be humble and put others first--it feels incongruous, But you're right, just the practice of acknowledging your own achievements to yourself has to feel pretty good. I think I am gonna try it! Love the colors in your outfit--the cardi is lovely. Also, how nice to have a friend who thinks of you while thrifting internationally!

  3. I am having a really low summer here, I constantly feel bad about stuff I haven't done, so maybe this list isn't such a bad idea. But I am honestly afraid that I am gonna feel worse after it, like I would think tha I haven't done enough and I am to lazy. I'm just in a really bad place right now.
Buuuuut, that doesn't change fact that your hair is really pretty and that I envy you on "sweater weather" you have down there, this sunny warm weather is killing me here, you cannot study when it is so sunny and hot outside.

  4. this list-making has helped me a lot already, as I always try on focusing on my achievements because I tend to feel bad about things I havent done or said and that other people think I'm silly or stupid, which I have become to understand that this is only a projection of my own thoughts onto these people who haven't actually done anything wrong, but it's me who tends to feel down about stuff like that. So, I recommend this feeling of "goodness around yourself" highly to all of you, because, as long as you don't become a complete and utter egomaniac, it only helps you get through your day with a higher spirit.
Otherwise, thinking of my body as a donut is quite a fun way to look at our digestive tract! And last but not least, you are absolutely splendid in your outfit, which I hope is a small contribution to your list to make you feel happy:)

  5. The making a list idea sounds pretty good actually. I've been feeling a little low this past week as I've just moved to a new country which is fine, I've made loads of new friends and I am loving it. But I just feel I've lost myself a bit, so maybe a list of what I have done will help me find me again. Also this outfit is making me dream of Autumn so bad... I just want to wear my boots and tights already!

  7. Those Lion King pins are the best! I'm loving your adorable cardigan and the fall colors in this outfit too.
I like the idea of writing down your accomplishments. I've been feeling like a failure at adulthood lately so maybe that's what I need to do!
