Baby darling doll-face honey

Happy 2013 guys! I hope all your New Years celebrations were marvellous!

This dress that Romwe sent me is pretty damn amazing. It's also quilted and really thick, and completely not appropriate for wearing in summer - hence I am going to be taking it with me on my trip to Japan (which is happening in just 25 days, oh my goooooosh!)
I LOVE the creepy doll-face appliqué, so I attempted to look a little bit like a creepy doll myself.

Rita Levi-Montalcini was an amazing, fiery and bad-ass neuroscientist, who sadly passed away a couple of days ago, aged 103 years old. As a future neuroscientist/cell biologist,  wannabe science communicator and feminist, Rita is someone who seriously inspires me. I wanted to write a short post about her amazing life.

Italian-born, she pursued a career in science at university despite both her father and 1930s society being generally against women in higher education. Then, she had to go into hiding when Mussolini came into power, as she was Jewish and thrown out of her university. To continue studying science, she built a secret research laboratory. Despite this, in 1986 she won a Nobel Prize for discovering something called "nerve growth factor", which greatly advanced our understanding of how neurons (nerve cells) work. Being at this point 77 years of age, she never slowed down - she went on to found the European Brain Research Institute in Rome, and a foundation encouraging the education of young women in Africa. She gave lectures and spoke out about promoting equality for women in science. And she turned up to work every day super well-dressed, with perfectly manicured hands and coiffured hair, even after turning 100.
Basically, I want to be Rita. The world will miss her. Read more about her here.

  1. oh that dress is awesome and so enticing! It's not good when in summer I read so many blogs and have so much time on my hands to online shop. Eek, I am very bad at resisting. the dark lippy is awesome, which brand if I may ask? And "bad-ass" definitely sums up this Rita and you too :D

  5. Ok, first of all, you look STUNNING on that dress and with black lips, OMG! I'm sad Romwe do small sizes (I've got too much bust and a L size won't fit on me :(, I need a bigger one even if it's big on my waist). I adore this kind of gothic doll look you created here!!

And secondly; I'm sad about Levi-Montalcini passed away. I've read some of her works and I respect her a lot, even 'cause in science sometimes looks like only men can succeed in this kind of works... but she show us that this isn't aways like this.

  6. When I first saw those dresses on Romwe, I always thought they looked a bit creepy, yet they are sooo beautiful! It looks amazing on you and gosh, I will never stop loving your socks!

I didn't know about the existence of that woman. Shame on me! I am looking forward to learning more about her and from what you've described in your blog, she seems to be a great, great person and I hope some day I can achieve some of her greatness.

  8. that dress looks so wonderful! i'm not one for dark colours, so i'm a little sad you can't get lighter dress colours. the dark colours look amazing on you, though! you really pull off black lipstick which isn't something a lot of people can do. this is an amazing look!

rita sounds like such a phenomenal person. that's so sad she ended up passing away, though it's also wonderful she lived such a long and full life. really inspiring.

    1. Aw man, Romwe needs to make more normal sized dresses!! It's pretty crazy - I often have to get an L for it to fit me in the bust, and I am a size A (or small B if we're being generous) in bra size. (!!!) Who fits into the size smalls??!
