DIY City Skyline Tee | Make Thrift Buy #13

This particular make thrift buy challenge reminds me of a project I made way back when in 2011, when galaxy t-shirts were all the rage. Now this isn't really something I would wear myself, but that's not the point of this video series - I aim to try out pretty much anything you send me! In fact, I just made the pinterest board where I store all the suggestions that are sent in public, so that you can vote on the ones you would most like to see me try out :)

So, did this particular one work out... or not? Have a watch!
Much love,

DIY Cage Suspender Skirt | Make Thrift Buy #12

Hello! Last year I saw this caged suspender-style skirt EVERYWHERE on the internet. I always thought that it would be pretty easy to make, so I was super excited when not one but TWO people suggested that I try it out for a Make Thrift Buy episode!

Have a watch!
P.s. I was somehow super productive and made TWO videos today... so I'm doing a little shameless self-promotion: I'll upload the next episode when this video reaches 1000 thumbs up ;)

I hope that you're all having a beautiful day, and please keep sending me amazing suggestions!

DIY Novelty Phone Handbag | Make Thrift Buy #11

Happy 2015! I hope that you all had a wonderful New Years and are looking forward to the year that is ahead!

Recreating this Betsey Johnson handbag was my first DIY project of 2015. I don't know why I chose something so likely to fail for my very first project for the year... but, I did, and here we are.

Have a watch, and let me know what you think! I really value your feedback because it helps me make my videos better :)

Love,

DIY Cat Pockets Dress - Make Thrift Buy #10

So I'm up to episode number 10 of Make Thrift Buy (!) and I've somehow managed to do 2 cat-themed things already. Well, this is the internet after all.

I've been on the lookout for loose-fitting black dresses in op-shops for months now so that I could try to make this Dolls Kill pinafore/dress! Retailing for a somewhat ridiculous $119, I thought that I could probably recreate it for somewhat cheaper. I reaaaally like how it turned out. Anyway, have a watch & enjoy! And please keep those amazing suggestions for new challenges coming!

p.s. for people without overlockers, I added a whole bunch of tips for sewing stretch fabrics to the video description.

Love,

DIY Pleated Skirt

Hello! So about a week ago I was inspired by Carbon Chic to learn how to make my own pleated skirt. I had always been scared of sewing pleats - but now I know that it's actually much easier than you might think! In this video, I have tried to explain how to make a style of pleats called "knife pleats" - the same type that is popular in American Apparel skirts right now - as simply as possible. Enjoy, and let me know what you think of the video!

I hope you're all having a great weekend,

DIY Eyeball Shirt | Make, Thrift, Buy Episode #6

For episode number #6, I attempt to recreate this wonderfully weird shirt by artist Elodie Antoine. I don't think that this shirt was ever available to buy, which kind of makes me sad. It's far too wonderful of a concept! See how I went in recreating it:
I hope that you've all been having a great day, and please keep those suggestions coming for weird (but cool) clothes that you've seen on the internet!

Make Thrift Buy Episode 5: Melting Tights

Hello! I've been desperate to try out this particular DIY ever since it was suggested to me about a month ago - Melting Tights! I thought that they would be too easy to make - but of course, things did not exactly go to plan. This video would have been up sooner, but the half-finished tights just spent three-fricken-weeks sitting there and TAUNTING ME. I'm not going to give away any more than that, you'll have to watch what happened for yourselves! *and I apologise in advance for my stuffy cold-voice*

I hope that you're all having a beautiful week so far,

Make, Thrift, Buy #3

Oh hai!

Episode number #3 of my new youtube series, Make, Thrift, Buy is now live. I spent a good three days working on this dress and filming the accompanying video, and I'm very happy/surprised by the results!

For those of you just catching up, MTB (yeah, we're doing acronyms now) is a series where I take suggestions for clothes/accessories that you guys have seen on the internet, and try to recreate them through thrifting, DIY or a combination of the two - with the goal of not having to resort to fast fashion.

Let me know what you think of the video, and help me out by sending me lots of links to things you want me to try!

I hope that you're all having a beautiful day,

The Thirty-Minute Skirt!

Today I'm sharing with you how something that I call my "30-minute skirt" - although in reality, it can often take me up to an hour to make :P But it's a really quick & easy skirt to make - a great project for a beginner, if you're just trying to wrap your head around a sewing machine!

I hope you're all having a wonderful day,

Make, Thrift, Buy - a new youtube series

Hello! I'm just popping in quickly today to let you all know about the new Youtube series that I've started!

The idea behind this series is to show you that when you see something really cool in an online/real-life store, you don’t immediately have to go and spend all your money on it – because you can often find a very similar thing in thrift shops, or, with a little bit of sewing knowledge and DIY-attitude, you can make the item for yourself.

So the challenge is this - you guys send me pictures of clothes you have found on the internet, and I have to try and recreate the item, either through DIY, thrifting or a combination of the two (without having to resort to fast fashion!)

Let me know what you think, and if you have any links to clothes that you would like me to do this challenge with, please leave them in the comments below!

How To: Embroidery Words

If you've seen my instagram account over the past week, you will have noticed that I have been embroidering words onto EVERYTHING. It's such a lovely, relaxing pastime.
So of course, I want to share my new-found knowledge with the world! I made a short little video that shows you how to stitch words onto things! I just used a scrap piece of fabric in this tutorial to demonstrate, but you can stitch onto really anything you can imagine - t-shirts, jumpers, backpacks, collars - you name it. This embroidery stitch (called a "split stitch") isn't only used for words - it's very versatile, so you can use it to stitch any lines you want!
For example, here is a sciencey-design I'm working on (guanine) - hopefully to be brought to life on my lab coat!
Anyway, here is the video. Enjoy, and use #diyannika via instagram to share your photos with me if you try out any of my tutorials! I love seeing what you guys come up with!

I hope you're all having a great day,

DIY Heart Collar

I just realised that nearly all my video tutorials centre around heart motifs (see: heart tights, heart dress, heart pinafore and now heart collar). I guess I must have a subconscious obsession with heart-printed things! Of course, you can substitute the heart shapes in my tutorials for any other easy-to-draw shapes, but hearts seem to be my go-to novelty shape (no regrets here).

Anyway, ever since finding my embroidered rude shirt (language warning for that link), I have wanted to embroider all of my collared things! I wanted to start off with something easy - hence the heart - but I'm definitely going to try words next!
Let me know what you think of the tutorial, and if you think you will give this a go! It's really easy, quick, and doesn't require a sewing machine (woo hoo!) so if you've got a spare 30 minutes to do a little crafternoon-ing (or crafternighting, if you're like me and always get inspired to start projects near midnight) - definitely give it a go! It's also perfect for people with little-to-no hand-sewing skills (like me)!

And here is a good link for the kind of stitch you need to know for this tutorial, which is called a satin stitch (does not need to be used on satin. Silly sewing lingo).

DIY Printed Tights (Video Tutorial)

Necklace c/o Eclectic Eccentricity | top is thrifted | skirt c/o Faith & Lola | tights are DIY | shoes are no longer for sale

Two years ago, I posted a tutorial on how to make your own heart print tights and it has remained the most-viewed tutorial on my blog to date!

However, the tutorial is missing some crucial steps which I wanted to cover properly with a video. Now you can see the process in motion! And as always, if you try this tutorial out then share a photo with me on instagram! Use #diyannika to share a photo with me (note: if your instagram account is set to private, I won't be able to see your photo!)

Wishing you all a super lovely day,

DIY Egg Brooch/Hair Clip

Hello! Because we are both free from uni, Katie and I have decided that every Tuesday is now going to be Craft Tuesday (we really need a better name. Any suggestions?) Anyway, we have wanted to make these clay fried eggs (I wanted a brooch, Katie wanted to make a hair clip) for a while now, so on our first ever Craft Tuesday we decided to give it a go! The original tutorial that we used is from Girl Guts, but it's always nice to see things in motion too, so we decided that we would make a short little video tutorial on what we did!

The materials that you will need are listed in the video's description. Enjoy!

DIY Crop Top

As promised, I have made a tutorial on how to turn a loose-fitting, long-sleeved top into a cute crop top! For this project, you can basically use any stretchy shirt that is either in your size, or is up to a few sizes too big for you. Have fun!

Much love,

DIY Heart Pinafore (tutorial + outfit)

Blouse is thrifted | pinafore is DIY | socks are c/o Sock Dreams

If you follow me on instagram then I've spoiled the surprise already, but this is what I got up to yesterday! This idea for a heart-shaped pinafore dress has literally been stopping me from sleeping for the past few nights, because I've been way too excited to make it! (Do any other sewers out there get inconveniently-timed sewing-inspirations at 4am in the morning? I sure do.)

The stretchy gingham material was an awesome find - $2 from the op-shop. I recommend to everybody that they search for fabrics in op-shops before resorting to places like spotlight (not only do these fabrics need to find new homes, but it's about 20 times cheaper).

And of course, I made a video explaining exactly how to make one for yourself! It's actually pretty easy to do - if you're able to make a skirt then you will have no problems turning it into a cute pinafore. In fact, this is the easy part.
You could even turn an old skirt into a heart-shaped pinafore dress using this tutorial - you don't have to start entirely from scratch!
Let me know what you think, and if you happen to give it (or any of my other tutorials) a go, then send me a photo using #diyannika on instagram.

I hope that you're all having a lovely day,

DIY: How To Make A Bow (sewing basics)

Hi there!

Today I'm bringing it back to the basics and teaching you guys how to sew a simple bow (and turn it into a cute hair accessory).

Learning how to sew a bow, and getting really good at it, was an important step for me in learning how to sew my own clothes! If you feel totally overwhelmed by my DIY dress and skirt videos, then give this one a go first. I promise that if you can master a bow, making your own clothes is not much more of a stretch - and bow-making will give you all the skills that you need to make something more complicated.

Let me know how you go using the hashtag #diyannika on instagram!

DIY Circle Skirt (no-zip method)

I really wanted to do a video version of my DIY circle skirt tutorial, so here it is!

When I can't be bothered to add a zip to a circle skirt - it can add up to an hour to a project - I use this no-zip method with some stretchy fabric instead!

Stretchy fabrics include lycra, jersey knits and spandex if you're on the lookout for some in a fabric store.

I will also upload a version on non-stretchy materials and adding zips soon.
Let me know what you think of the tutorial! I love you guys :)
