Spring Fling / Meeting Minute Physics and Asap Science

Which is great, as I've packed away my tripod and camera for moving house tomorrow, (eek, tomorrow?? I really have to pack my clothes)! Before I get back to packing up, let me quickly tell you about this outfit. These photos were taken on the first day of Spring in this beautiful dress from Modcloth. I'm trying to rewear the "older" stuff in my wardrobe a lot more, and I can't believe I had neglected this dress for so long (in fact, the last time I wore it was on the first day of Spring last year!) For shame! It's got such a gorgeous vintage cut and the super-bold print of sunflowers is magnificent. Today's science story also happens to be some exciting Annika news - please indulge me. And possibly also get jealous. About a month ago, I met the brains behind minute physics (Henry) and asap science (Gregory and Mitchell), whose videos I have featured countless times on this blog before - see here and here for example. I also managed to also palm off blog business cards to them both, though I don't know if they've ever had a look! I met them because they were in Australia for the IFLS Live show (to which I missed out on tickets), but they had a "meet up" in Sydney beforehand to which I enthusiastically attended with about 3 other fans - and then awkwardly said hello because I didn't actually know what they looked like, seeing as their videos mainly feature their hands. They were all such lovely people, though, and my housemate and I chatted to them for almost an hour! Real-life proof that I met Henry (left), Mitchell and Gregory (right). Here's a couple of amazing science videos from these guys. Firstly, asap science aims to destroy any notion that what you see is really real. (I recently made a very similar post about the illusion of reality).   And this is a favourite video of mine from minute physics, which I posted about nearly a year ago now in relation to this pink dress, about how the colour pink doesn't physically exist. Leather collar, kitten shins.

I've been listening to a 90s grunge playlist on spotify all morning and I think it's worked it's way into my outfits a little bit. This is definitely not a bad thing, and I think my style has been drifting a little grunge-ways anyway... I'm really getting into the black lipstick though. I looooove black lipstick, almost as much as bright red lipstick. The only problem is that I end up transforming into a creepy Dr Who-style character if I eat while wearing it - it goes everywhere and I end up with black smudges all over my chin and upper lip. Not pretty, haha. However, how pretty is this Romwe dress? I decided to pair it with a mustard cardigan to accentuate the yellow floral pattern on the dress. wearing dress - c/o Romwe Fine & Dandelion cardigan - c/o Modcloth collar clips - Ebay tights - c/o Oasap So check out this little guy: (image source) Really, I have no way to segue in this science item today and it has nothing to do with my outfit (at best I could say it's purplish and greenish). But ignore that - how cool is this transparent turtle?? This is not something that exists in nature (although freaky looking dudes kind of like this do exist in the deepest dark depths of the ocean). This is a regular old turtle, to whom artist Iori Tomita has applied scientific techniques of staining and dying to transform it into a colourful, transparent work of art (although I hope it died naturally first... hmm). In any case, it's cool what he does - he removes scales and skin, then soaks the creature in an enzyme which eats away muscles and tissues - until just the right point where it's become see-through. Then he stains them using dyes, and this is the result. Pretty cool.

Hellooooo Spring!

I was entirely over the moon to have Modcloth contact me a few weeks ago asking about a collaboration with my blog! Of course, I said yes. I have only been obsessively following Modcloth for.. oh I don't know... some number of years. They were the first online store that I ever discovered, and I remember falling in love with it immediately as there was just nowhere in Australia that stocked the same kind of clothes as they did, and it opened up a whole new world of clothing possibilities to me. I knew that I had to get both this cardigan and this dress once I saw them, because they would go together perfectly - and I wasn't at all disappointed! This is my bright yellow first-day-of-spring outfit. (Not that it is very warm yet. It snowed last night - winter wanted to go out with a bang, apparently. Well, you sure made it hard because you all have really, really good style (or you really know my style down to a tee. Both are probably true and both make me super happy) BUT I had to choose Rachel from Floral Prints and Common Sense who designed me some amazing blouses. (You should probably also go check out her blog. It's full of really awesome style and designs and DIYs.) Here is her entry: I love them all, and they would all go so perfectly with this skirt, but I particularly want the green stripey shirt. It is so pretty. If I had the time, I would totally go and make it now, because I even have some fabric which is close to that and would work so well!! Ahh, why can't there be just a few more days in the week???
