Mendl's Patisserie

I needed to find some outlet for my love of the new Wes Anderson movie The Grand Budapest Hotel, and this apparently involved me dressing up like an extra from a Wes Anderson film and setting up a miniature photoshoot on top of my kitchen table.
I nicked this Mendl's box from my local cinema as we were leaving the movie (don't worry, there were about 200 of the things and they were probably just going to be thrown out at the end of the promotion), the whole time feeling an affinity with Zero Moustafa and Mr Gustave as they stole the Boy with Apple (because the stakes for my theft were definitely as high as they were in the film).
I desperately want to live in a world with the aesthetic of the Grand Budapest Hotel - really, of any Wes Anderson movie. But while seamless virtual reality is still a good few decades away, I'll have to make do with my outfit posts and photoshop to pretend that that world exists.

Sweater is vintage | top - can't remember | belt and skirt are thrifted | socks are handmade | shoes are from Naot

I think I might also have to do a Moonrise Kingdom inspired shoot now. With that pink dress. You know, for consistency, and definitely not because I want to be Suzy Bishop (I do, though the person I know who comes closest to achieving that is Polly Bland).

I hope that you're all having the sweetest day!

  2. Wes is one of my favorite people of all time. His love for fantastic color palettes, symmetry, well placed music and dialogue that just makes you smile are just some of the reasons that if I could, I would marry him haha

  4. I quite enjoyed The Grand Budapest Hotel, but it hardly comes close to the genius that is Moonrise Kingdom. Looking forward to seeing your shoot. I've been on the hunt for the perfect Suzy Bishop pink dress for some time now:)

I absolutely adored Grand Budapest Hotel, and I love Wes Anderson in general. Your outfit is perfect :)

  9. Haha I love these little photoshoots, they are super quirky and fun! By the way, I saw you wearing this hairstyle on your Instagram and commented to a friend that you should wear it more often because it suits you SO well! I hope you do, it looks really beautiful when it's up like that. I wish I could get my hair to do that. Still too scared to potentially damage with teasing and I haven't mastered the art of the plastic Bump-It hair thingies to make it look like that. ONE DAY!!

    1. All those words and I forgot to mention that I'm really excited to see this movie, the previews for it looked great, it's just about finding time to fit it in!

    2. :) :) :) Thank you so much!! I will definitely try to remember to wear it like this more often, in that case! I don't have a plastic bump-it thing and just have to deal with my hair being a big mess for a couple of days after I do this, and use a LOT of conditioner, haha. I don't think I've damaged it, luckily :) But I should invest in one of those bumpy hair thingies too!

  10. I've recently moved to Canada from NZ (butbutbut I am a qlder, so don't hate me xP) and haven't had internet for months! Hello fibre~ Anyways! I just wanted to say your hair has grown a lot from when I last was on your blog! I also recently got pastel hair/ destroyed my flowing locks and am growing my hair back out, so I thought you would like to know that yours has indeed grown... a lot!

  11. This is so nice, I love it! I wish there were Mendl's boxes in my theater - although I guess it's not impossible to make from scratch.

  14. I have a bit of an odd request. Would it be possible for you to make a scan of the front of the box for me? I've been wanting to make a t-shirt with the Mendl's design for some time now, but everyone that offer's reproductions of the box/t-shirts uses inaccurate designs. I've considered purchasing a promotional box myself, but they are hundreds of dollars and scarcely available. I assure you that I would only be using the scan for a shirt for myself, I would not be profiting from, or distributing the design in any way. If you could help a fellow Grand Budapest fan find his outlet for love of the film it would be most appreciated. :)

    1. Hehehe that's okay, but I don't actually have a decent scanner that'd let me do that :(

I *could* take a really high-quality picture for you on my SLR with even-lighting, and send you an uncompressed file? That'd probably work pretty well :) Let me know if I can do that for you (and send me your email address!) x

    2. That would be wonderful! You can send it to willfulvisions@gmail.com with drop box or google drive or something (I imagine it will be larger than 25mb if it's a hq uncompressed image). Also, I realize there will be size restrictions even shooting with an SLR, but if you could set the camera for the largest size possible, that would be great. I was originally aiming to get a 275-300 dpi/ppi image at around 7"x7" to 8"x8", but honestly, I'd be happy with whatever you can give me. Thanks again! :)
