Well hello there!

Have a specific question? Please see my FAQ page.

My name is Annika and I'm from Sydney. I study science and make clothes. Here is where you can find the strange mash-up of my two worlds, as I try and make science fashionable and the fashion world more scientific. I am a big advocate of dressing exactly how you want to dress and not letting anyone else tell you otherwise. I like making my own clothes rather than paying $300 for the same thing on the high street. I have recently made the commitment to promote only ethically-sourced fashion. And I'm also super enthusiastic both about learning things and teaching people things, so I hope that if you hang around here long enough, you might learn something new!

My youtube channel where I make clothes:

Where should you start? Well, if you want to catch up, you should read this post:

    1. Yeah! I found a really good tutorial for it a while back... i think this is it. my internet is slow at the moment so i can't watch the video to make sure, but if this isn't it then i am fairly sure the tutorial i used was from this website.

I'm from the UK and I was wondering if you knew where I could get the Nordic Blonde Ultimate Lightener L1++? If not a shop maybe an online website?

    1. hey,
maybe you can only get it in australia? I know that there is a faaaar larger selection of hair products in the UK because that's where I get most of mine shipped from! you can just get it from any pharmacy in australia (do you have priceline there? that's where i got mine from). i tried to find it on amazon but couldn't though, so I'm not sure about online. But now I use just a powder bleach tub that I mix with 30 Vol developer and it works just as well :)

  13. Hey Annika! Loving your blog and your hair is amazing! So I was checking out the Wholesale site that you link every now and then. This place is a great deal! Have you had any issues with the clothes or shipping? I've never heard of it so it would be nice to hear about it from someone who orders things from there a lot Keep on keepin on, girl! Thank you! :)

    1. Hey you! Thanks heaps :) Wholesale dress is alright. You have to take a risk shopping there though, and all of their stuff is very, very small (US 0-2, AU/UK 6-8 kind of size). But the price is very tempting, I know :) I have had some teeny issues, like shoes with buckles tend to break and the cheaper clothes are not very good. But the bags and hats and socks and tights and flat shoes are all really pretty good so I'd go with that for your first order :)

    1. Hi Victoria, thank you so much :):) My vintage collection is actually due to about 5 years of vintage shopping - it's taken a long time to build up my collection! my best tip would be to go vintage shopping in rural areas! Not city/metropolitan areas.
Rural areas is where you find the best scores, at the lowest prices (because often the people aren't saavy to the vintage trend) and it hasn't been picked-over hundreds of times already by trendy young hipsters.
      Good luck!

You also fired up my passion for science. I've always wanted to be a biologist or study forensic science but never got the chance too.

Thanks for showing me that fashion and science can collide and create a whole new universe as you did with this blog. You're an inspiration to us and I hope that many more blessings and good things will come for you this 2013.

    Keep rocking!

I use a basic SLR, but it's served me very well in the three (almost four) years I've owned it. It's a Canon EOS 1000D. And the lens I use is just the lens that came with the camera when I bought it (basic Canon EFS 18-55mm)
      Hope that helps you! :)

  25. Hi Annika!

I just found your blog in a completely random way but I absolutely loved it!
I'm an engineer at a big automotive company and just decided that I want my hair pink. I know that everyone will look at me, cause you're expected to be normal when you wear a suit everyday and you have a serious job in the office, but I simply don't care. You can love what you do (SCIENCE!) and still be yourself... as long as you're good at what you do nothing else should matter :)

Thank you for the inspiration and the tutorials!

Whenever people stare at me for wearing something out-there (all the time) it's okay, because I've just decided that I'm making the world a little bit more of an interesting place :)

    1. Ahhh thank you! Comments like that make me happier than anything!

I actually got my awesome dip-dye one from a store called "Body Line" in Japan. They actually do international shipping though, and have an online site in English, so youcan find the wig (or a similar one) here: http://www.bodyline.co.jp/bodyline/showAll.asp?type=cosplay (the code of my wig is W120 but it won't let me link directly to it). I don't understand the difference in "sizes" though I'm sorry :| they were all just the same size when I bought it in Japan.

  27. Hello Annika!I want to start off by saying that you inspire me so much! I love your cute vintage style and your little fun science at the end of the posts. :) Because I grew up in a family that believed academics and fashion don't overlap, I never really got the chance to buy the clothes that I liked. Now that I'm older, my parents don't care anymore, but I don't really know where/what to start shopping. So... what are some of the essential pieces that pull together your look?

    Thanks so much!

    Replies
    1. Thank you :D My essential pieces are a boater hat (if you couldn't tell, haha), but then things I wear all the time are a pair of high-waisted shorts and a couple of simple cardigans in different colours. I also rewear a couple of patterned dresses all the time. And a circle-skirt/skater skirt is also a very versatile wardrobe item. OH! And a pair of patterned tights ;)

  33. Wasn't sure where to put this comment, but I thought the about page worked since you let us know you like science and study it.

I don't know if you've heard of this book, but I thought you might like to check out "Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie -A Tale of Love and Fallout" by Lauren Redniss. I read it for one of my creative non-fiction classes a few semesters ago and thought it might be right up your alley. Not only is it an interesting read, but the illustrations are beautiful. Lauren Redniss made the artwork for the book using cyanotype and the cover is printed using glow-in-the-dark ink (which freaked me out the first night I had it, haha).

Anyway, thanks for the constant inspiration and interesting posts!

  35. Annika~ you are my superior role model! I wish I could be someone as strong and passionate like you eventually. Question: How do you study bachelors science, travel, sew and make clothing, and work with so many companies in the industry? How do you get working with an industry or company too? I think these essential questions can help me learn a lot more about who I want to become and how to pursue a similar dream to yours. Thanks!

  38. Hi Annika! I've only just started watching your videos (as I've been looking for tutorials on how to make a cosplay skirt) and I'm so so happy I have! There are so many videos out there that are just so confusing and rushed, and require a thousand and one materials, but you make much better clothes in a way that is so much more accessible to me! Your videos have inspired me to spend all my money on fabric and spend all summer making cute little clothes :3 So thank you! :D

  39. Hey! I really want to say I just LOVE you're blog! Just watching and reading your tutorials in my free time inspires me to get sewing and try creating new things on my own! You have amazing fashion sense, too, and it's so cute and brave! You're YouTube tutorials are amazing, by the way. They're really easy to follow, and I was wondering what software or editing program you used to make them. It's really cool the way you add little zigzags to show where to sew and such, and I have a blog of my own and am thinking about creating a YouTube channel for it (creativity4eternity.blogspot.com)

Thanks for being such an inspiration! ;D
