A Post of Outtakes

In the age of the internet, instagram, blogs and selfies, it's fairly easy to compose a carefully-crafted version of yourself for the wider world to see. My world appears through a select composite of angles and arrangements, positions and poses, faces and filters.

To the unaware, this can lead to the impression that my life is perfect - that I live in an eternal picnic-world of cute patterns and prints and perfect lipstick; that I never have struggles or stresses; that I never wake up with bed hair or panda-eyes because I've forgotten to take off my makeup the night before.

But life isn't perfect, and it's good to be reminded now and again that everyone else doesn't just roll out of bed at 6am rocking perfect hair and eyeliner.

Besides, some of these photos are just way too hilarious not to share. So, enjoy this post of less-than-perfect outtakes (quickly, before I decide that this is the worst mistake of my life and I take this post down!)
When taking photos, I will inevitably get an unstoppable urge to pull a ridiculous face and completely ruin the photo. Me and Katie didn't even realise that both of us had done this at the same time (in the above photo) until looking at the photos afterwards. And here I am ruining the nice photo below:
Oh Annika... gosh... might I say that you are looking stunning today? Did you do something to your hair? (I didn't even know that my face was capable of doing this; thank goodness for cameras!)
I'm not quite sure what was going through my head when I decided to pose like this...
Again, not the best pose I've ever thought of (...robot girl?):
And, frankly, the next photo just terrifies me a little bit. This outfit clearly brought out the top model in me.
Hi, Annika. That is a good... face... you've got there.
Now I'll share with you guys a few photography tips and tricks. This is how I get all my flawless outfit shots.
There's the flawless hair-flick photos:
The "this is going to look AWESOME" spinning shot:
Then there's the classic "hang on, I can't tell if the camera is working" pose:
Apparently, I also pull a LOT of grumpy faces:
And I am thinking that I might use this as part of my modelling portfolio:
"Oh! This will be a cute pose!" *FAIL*
"The sun has suddenly come out and blinded me" pose:
And the "I'm just looking at this teeeeeny ant" pose:
Good one Annika, that'll make a great photo: because normal people often walk around holding all their hair out at the sides of their head.
Classic vintage pose (aka going to the toilet in the lake):
Elegance:
Okay, I think I have sufficiently destroyed my carefully-crafted internet persona now. Just remember, next time you start comparing your life to seemingly-perfect blogs and instagram accounts - they don't often post the outtakes of life.
I hope that you've all had a lovely week,

  5. Haha this is the best thing ever! It is really easy to forget that those perfect bloggers are real people too. Very refreshing, I had a good laugh. Although I don't see what's wrong with the classic pinup and elegance poses :)

  8. The sun blinding one is genuinely adorable.

My burlesque ladies and I make a habit of always taking some truly unflattering pictures at a show. It's fun and a nice juxtaposition to the face we show on stage.

  9. See now I look at this and ask myself in horror, "How can her outtakes look better than my intakes?! D:" I have made way too many stupid poses trying to find good ones--and you look adorable in each and every one of these pictures, haha.

    2. Well no matter what face or pose you're pulling in your shots, it shows through your amazing character and it's really lovely to see a peek into some of the facial expressions you may pull when the whole world isn't looking. It's nice, it's a nice glimpse into who you are :) x

(Also you flatter me, haha--have to go through 100 shots every time before I can find 5 acceptable pictures.. :P)

  13. Annika,
I have long debated about doing a post like this. There are far too many moments where I stray from the poses and go straight to silly faces. I think it would surprise people. Your outtakes are far more attractive than mine. One of my favourite outtakes of myself was taken when I was in the woods, I pulled my hood over my head and started walking like a troll. It looks like I have photo shopped myself into a troll, but there was no photoshop involved. I don't even think I could share it! It would frighten the world! Nobody who reads my blog would be able to sleep or forgive me!

Thanks for posting this. I really enjoyed it, especially the grumpy faces. I've been known to have those too ^.^

  21. Hi Anika,

You never fail to put a smile on my face and that is what makes your blog so endearing. When you post something new you literally make my day. I rarely use bloglovin and receive your blogs directly to my email address (where it doesn’t have this comment feature) so I rarely comment on here but I just want to thank you and Katie (she appears to play a major factor in this collective duo) for all the fun, fashion inspiration and science outakes you bring to us on a regular basis.

The grumpy girl look is so funny! I too think the bike outtake is so cute and what a beautiful bike to pose on. Good choice. That dress would also make an excellent template for a tartan dress with all the tartan fabric you have now. I have so many ideas of how to use the tartan but have been holding back as I have read you have so many things going along in life at the moment including uni and I was just thinking I would hold back until the end of the year when you get some ‘me’ time. I went to uni a long time ago and always found the spring time to be the most demanding time for uni.

Take care and don’t change! You are perfect!

  27. Thank you Annika! I often crave for a more realistic account of daily life--not just the best of the best--so this made me feel much less alone in my awkwardness. It's a daily part of my life (and I'm sure others feel the same) so I'm glad to see that someone else isn't afraid to document all aspects of their journey in life. Do this more! Such an enjoyable post!
