A Colourful Mermaid

This is a very colourful outfit that I have been planning in my mind for quite a long time - I just had to wait for all of the pieces to come to me in the mail (all the way to Australia, so it's been a while!) I'm very happy because it turned out exactly as I imagined. I'm going to save this outfit for an overcast, rainy day.

Some days, I just want to post pretty outfits on my blog. The science I'm really focusing on at the moment at uni is all about eukaryotic transcriptional and translational regulation and how cells regulate their mRNAs, eIFs and other proteins to control gene expression. While I am finding it very fascinating, it's not the easiest thing for communicating here (in fact I showed it to Luci, who just said "yeah... that was all gobbledegook. Like, I got some words were in English, but that was all I understood.")
So I hope you all don't get mad at me for missing out on a science fact today. Alright... a little science fact then. Many of you were interested by my Synaesthesia post the other day, and said that you also strongly associate colours with numbers or letters, but don't actually see them. Have a look at Ideasthesia. Probably, the majority of people have some form of this (just look at the "Kiki and Bouba" effect, for instance. Why would most people associate a spiky shape with the word "kiki" and a rounded shape with "bouba"? Do we all have a predisposition to synaesthetic-like-qualities?).

  2. Your outfit is awesome! that blouse is so out there but you made it work perfectly :)

ooh, I had heard of the kiki/booba thing but totally forgot about it, thank you! I'm a linguist and an interesting idea that's come up a few times in classes is patterns of semantics associated with spelling? Like sn- words commonly relate to a nose - snort, snout, sneeze, snot. Really interesting stuff! x

    1. I think, if I wasn't doing science then I would probably choose to do linguistics, it's so interesting. Sniffle as well ;)

  17. I am so confused by these tights, hahaha. No crescent?

It's interesting to watch the symbols of religion be co-opted for fashion, they certainly seem to hold some occult value or something like it. They hold power even if one does not subscribe to the religion that uses a particular symbol. With modern technology it's possible to see the rapid progress of annexation of symbols, super interesting. I wonder when the crosses went up without the astrological symbols attached if people really took notice of the transformation of it from a mainstay of astrology to the christ who was probably nailed to a pole. The upside down cross seems to be big in fashion, and the keffiyeh has had quite a run, the appropriation of cultural symbols without the appropriation of culture, interesting stuff. Second-order simulacra, and other concepts related to semiotics people don't much think about. From bouba/kiki to other linguistic/semiotic emergent behaviors, it's clear we live in a pretty interesting time.

    1. I find it really interesting too. Honestly, for a lot of people, I'm not sure if there's much of a deeper meaning behind it other than pure aesthetic (maybe where the fashions started off there was, but for the copy-cat wholesale stuff, not so much). For example, when we were in Japan, most people see western religions more in a comic-book kind of way... like they would equate jesus and mickey mouse: they're both just symbols of western pop-culture. And japan, and asian webstores, are where these kinds of clothes and velvet cross dresses and jumpers with jesus and various symbols of the occult are really pumping out from. Maybe the trend will mean different things to different people as it moves across cultures. Being entirely non-religious, I am wearing these tights purely for the aesthetic. If I wore them in a less secular country then perhaps the reaction to them would be different. My boyfriend wears cross earrings and big chunky cross necklaces for the same reason - he thinks they look cool, nothing more. Still, I'm sure someone could write a very interesting sociology/cultural studies dissertation about it, haha.

    2. The "bleeding" star of david on these tights sure is interesting though. I don't know what that's about, and I do wonder if the person who originally made the design meant anything deeper behind it.

    3. I used to describe the LA hipsters as stealing all the looks of things with meanings and stealing absolutely none of the meaning or motivations. At the same time, when I moved there I stopped wearing blue or red banadanas, as well as a few other colors...so, yea...

As far as the bleeding star, I don't know. I know the crescent is often ignored in western cultures as far as the symbols of the judaic religions go. A bleeding star is certainly a profound statement, intentional or not, considering the relatively recent nature of the holocaust and the entirety of middle east politics. Anyway, keep up being awesome.

  21. your necklace is just sooo cute! hahaha I love mermaids, and the necklace is just too whimsical and pretty, although on myself it would probably just look kiddish and out of place!

and that Kiki and Bouba thing is really interesting!! first time I've heard of it. personally I associated bouba with something round because it reminds me of the word 'bulbous'. and there are probably so many theories for 'Kiki' but for me the shapes of the letters involved look sharp and spiky. and I guess you could say the same applies to Bouba, where the letters look quite round.

ooh and thank you for your comment! the sunset shoot was taken at about 6-7ish, that's when the sun starts to go down nowadays.

  24. Lovely outfit! ♥

But can I just ask.. you study science, but you wear Christian symbols. How come? Just curious! And there are so many people wearing crosses nowadays, but I don't really see why.

    1. Well, it is still possible to study science and be christian, you know (I'm not though). But I just find crosses aesthetically pleasing, nothing more to it than that, and I think that's true of a lot of people. Or they wear crosses because it's kind of "dark" and "occult-like" and that's the style they're going for. The cross symbol is really not that related to Christianity (in fashion) anymore, I feel.

  25. Super cute! Love the mermaid necklace! ^about science and religion, I am a scientist, but I am not an atheist. We should never have so much hubris as to think we have it all figured out or ever will, in other words...I try to keep an open mind to there being or not being a god. Seems like too many mysterious things in the world for there not to be one, but maybe life is simply grand in itself!
