Packing for Japan

Because the weather in Australia right now is entirely at odds with anything wintery, I've found myself at a bit of a loss as to how to pack for Japan. And I leave in 2 weeks so I really need to start thinking about packing!

To help me plan my wardrobe, I decided to make this little picture of the clothes I'm planning on taking with me. Some of these are still in the mail... fingers crossed they arrive by the time I leave!! Any other recommendations for keeping warm from those actually experiencing winter right now would be most appreciated. It's hard to think about thermals when you're in 40 degree C temperatures.
1. Cape Coat from Oasap
2. Black knee-high socks
3. Red Cartoon Cat Sweater from Sheinside
4. Leather Skirt from Faith & Lola
5. Night Creeper Necklace from Merrin & Gussy
7. Doll Quilted Dress from Romwe
8. Chelsea Boots from Asos
9. Cat Face Sweater from Romwe
10. Snow White Pendant from Merrin & Gussy
11. Musical Note Smiley Skirt from Sheinside
12. Lion Print Sweater from Sheinside

I also just noticed that apparently I am bringing not one, not two but three sweaters with cats on them (big cats and little cats alike). I clearly like cats on my clothes, so... that's what I've learnt today.

  1. You are going to Japan again? Ahh this is my dream. I really love Japan, and Korea. It's my dream to visit and live in one of these countries, aw you're so lucky. The clothes look good above, but I do not know what the climate there ... Is it hot? Cold? I do not know. I also have a big problem to pack for traveling, know what it is!

    1. It's very very cold! There might be snow and most days will be about 5C.
I am very lucky :) Japan is the most incredible place!

  2. Very kawaii choice of clothes, Annika! ;) You will look like an asian cat lover! Everything is very whimsical but now I'm really curious about the thermal underwear... I think I never had the chance to wear such things! Anyway, I really love that Romwe dress, it's exquisite, lovely and ultra whimsical^^

  3. Hmmm I guess it'd be around 8 - 15C around this time in Japan so sweaters and tights are definitely the way to go! Maybe add a couple of scarves and thick leggings/jeggings and short socks to layer.
To get a better idea of the clothes people wear, you can always check out Japanese magazines like Seventeen JP and Zipper =) (here is the link to

    1. Scarves!!!! I'd totally forgotten they existed. They would be an excellent idea. Haha
I've been before - I know how people dress! (Fantastically is how. Even old ladies. I saw so many over-80s ladies wearing sparkly shoes.)

    1. Good idea! Those suede shows would get ruined by snow.

  5. Bring a nice beanie for your head! (Or earmuffs). Also, thermal shirts! Even if sweaters are nice and cozy, they can still be really cold sometimes (as I've learned this season...)

Have lots of fun in Japan!

  6. Japan, that's awesome! You can now make you of the doll-face dress. By the way, I have two friends in Japan currently on exchange, maybe you'll run into them (seems likely with the millions upon millions of people living there). In France, it was freezing, and I was the only crazy one wearing skirts instead of pants, so it's definitely tricky packing for the cold when you are inclined to wear skirts all the time.

    1. I don't even think I own any pants, sooo...
If I see any other foreigners, I will yell at them "HEY ARE YOU MEG'S FRIENDS?!" until I find them, yeah?

  7. I don't know where in Japan you're going, but in Tokyo it's like 10° now which is really okay! But of course, if you are coming from a country where it's 40° or more, I guess 10° is awfully cold! So yes, pack sweaters and stuff. And also: gloves, ear muffs, scarves and many socks! Essentials. =) Have fun there and send pictures!! x

    1. Ear muffs!!! That's a good idea. 10 degrees is a heatwave! I hope its 10 there everyday - then I'll be fine..

  9. Oh my gosh, you're going to Japan, how amazing!
Good luck with packing, I would give you tips if I had some! I can't even pack properly when I go to my student house for five days! In your position I'd just throw all of my warm tights, gloves, scarves and boots, and then I think I'd try to fit my favourite skirts and sweaters. Don't forget warm jackets (that cape in the post is awesome), and you're ready to go!!!
(And take an umbrella. When I moved to the city where I study I forgot to take one and I had to steal an abandoned umbrella at uni. U.U)

    1. Yes! I made the mistake of not bringing an umbrella last time! Thanks for reminding me;)

  11. OMG you live in Australia and you're going to Japan, THIS IS JUST TOO AWESOME. So jealous :D

Here, where I live now is even a little bit colder than in Japan, so what can I say: layering is the best option. I'm also a dress girl and I can't stand trousers no matter what temperature it is, haha :> So yes, sweaters, tights (just in case: you can wear two pairs at one time ;) and gloves. Personally, after few minutes without gloves I don't feel my hands (and I still forget to take my mittens from home everyday XD)Hope it helps, have a great time in Japan <3

    Love, B

  12. I love the cape coat! I would recommend getting a massive scarf and a bobble hat so your head doesn't get too cold :)

    1. Yeah! My plan for the whole head department is wig + beanie, so I'm hoping both will keep me warm!

  13. This sounds so exciting! It has been my life ambition for years and years to go to Japan. My boy and I are saving up to go for our honeymoon, but a year after we've married cause it will take that long.
What kind of holiday are you having there? City shopping and sight-seeing or are you seeing some of the countryside too?
I really want to go and see the hot springs and the cherry blossoms...

Also, for the cold - you should take a big thick scarf. Scarfs can almost add as much warmth as jumpers if you have the right one. And layering knee socks over tights, it looks cute and keeps you extra warm (although my knee socks always slip down, looking for a solution for that one)

Your coat in the top left looks awesome though. So cosy, and a little bit fantasy-esque.

Hope you have a great time!

    1. I guess city-seeing, shopping, friend meeting and bar-drinking is the kind if trip we're planning. Haha me and my boyfriend are finally of age in japan (20) and we're so excited to go to the cutest bars ever that we saw last time, but couldnt get into! Ahhh and you're going to love it so much when you do go - I will make sure I post loads of fun places to visit for you!

Knee socks over thick tights is a super good idea. I was planning on stocking up on cute animal patterned knee-highs once I get to Japan!

  14. I'm so jealous you're going to Japan! I lived there for three years and it feels like a second home to me, I MUST go back! Have a green tea KitKat for me, mmkay.

P.S. Thermal tights are a god-send, you can get them in Uniqlo when you're there ;)

    1. AWESOME. I'm definitely going to have to buy them when i'm there. I just saw photos this morning of snow in harajuku and a bunch of girls walking around in a SNOWSTORM with bare legs/very sheer tights. Maybe this is how they did it ;)

  18. You're a very lucky girl going to Japan, I hope you have an amazing time!
Your clothing choices are super cute too! I tend to make sure I have a huge chunky knit scarf around my neck in winter, it really does the trick!

There's also a gorgeous fringed La Moda bag up for grabs over at my blog, if you would like to enter? x

  22. Here the average is something like 5C these days(now its 7C at 4pm), there came A LOT of snow in Tokyo area just a few days ago, but fortunately(or not?) not so much in Osaka, at least they melt and go away soon.
I suggest you to bring one warm coat such as Down/Feather jacket or long coat! That cape in the pic might be cold or might be okay ... if you wear enough under it!
I love knee-high styles myself too but I'm afraid to wear them on this season, maybe I'd wait a bit more.. so if you'll stay outside looong time, i don't recommend them, but if you have some long coat or something, or if you will stay mostly inside, i think they are fine!
I can help with giving some information of Japan anytime!

oh btw I love your apple pendant! want them too :3 !!

    1. Thank you so much for your help! I will hopefully be inside or at least exploring shopping streets most of the time :) and I love knee-high styles and don't actually have any pants... sooo... It will be my own fault if I am cold, I guess.
I just saw all the photos of snow in Japan! It's pretty but I hope it melts too - I don't love snow.
